What is the Universities Business Challenge?

The Universities Business Challenge gives you the opportunity to develop and test your entrepreneurial and employment skills, helping you to prepare for your future career. The simulation-based competition has been testing students since 1998, with more than 35,000 participants. The competition involves team members collaborating to make decisions for their virtual company with the goal of increasing profits, building their market share and achieving high customer satisfaction levels. There is also emphasis on meeting sustainability targets, teaching students to make environmental considerations whilst managing a business.

The UBC experience at Sheffield University Management School

Universities Business Challenge runs in the first semester of the academic year. You will be supported by our employability team from forming your team to (hopefully!) winning the trophy. You will meet with your team on a weekly basis where you will make decisions based on a business scenario which you will be given. After five weeks, the top teams in each of the leagues will go onto the semi finals (and finals) which are in person and at various locations across the UK.

Join Anett Lai, BA Accounting and Financial Management and Economics, and she takes you along to the UBC Semi Final.

Why take part in UBC?

By taking part in Universities Business Challenge, you will be able to put all of the knowledge that you have learned in your degree into a real world situation which will give you the edge in job applications. You will also practice your commercial awareness, adaptability and team working skills.

Representing Sheffield in the UBC was an absolutely amazing experience. From the very first selection trials to the grand finals - all the trading periods and presentations shaped us into a team that truly enjoys doing what they do best. I’ve travelled to different cities, made friends with people who I never would have otherwise met and most importantly - had a lot of fun. UBC is definitely going to remain as a core memory of my first year at the university.
