Recharging over summer: how to stay on track academically whilst making time for yourself over summer
MBA Student, Carlo, shares his top tips for making the most of your summer, whilst also managing to get ahead before the next academic year
The sun is finally shining over the Sheffield University Management School, painting a portrait of summer. After months of diligent study, my heart leaps at the prospect of a well-deserved break. Yet, amidst the allure of sunny adventures and lazy afternoons, there’s the gentle, persistent whisper of academic pursuit. The question then arises: How do I recharge over the summer while keeping my academic goals on track?
First things first, a confession: I love being an MBA student. The thrill of challenging business cases, the richness of diverse perspectives, and the exhilaration of innovation all give me a sense of purpose and motivation. But let’s be real. A little downtime is not only desirable, but it's also crucial for our well-being and mental health.
So, here’s my approach to staying academically focused, while basking in the glory of the summer sun and enjoying some well-deserved me-time.
Be a scheduler extraordinaire
First and foremost, I'm an ardent advocate of planning. Grab your favourite planner or digital app, and start by blocking off downtime each day. These moments of reprieve can include anything from a morning gym session, a midday walk, or an evening football session. This practice helps ensure that your 'me-time' doesn't get swept away in the hustle of academic activities.
Set clear academic goals
Let's be honest, the idea of studying over the summer isn't exactly thrilling. So, why not break it down into manageable chunks? Define what you want to achieve, academically, over the summer. Whether it's reading up on a specific subject, improving on a skill, or prepping for the next semester, having clear, achievable goals can make the process more enjoyable and less daunting.
Choose joy, choose passion
Summer is the perfect time to align your academic pursuits with what truly excites you. Is there a business book you've been itching to read? Or perhaps a case study that piqued your interest during the semester? Make these your summer projects. When you're engaged and passionate about what you're studying, it doesn't feel like work; it becomes part of your summer adventure.
Get outdoors
Who says studying must be confined to a library or a study room? Grab your books and head to a local park, or if you're feeling adventurous, the picturesque Peak District isn’t too far. The fresh air, coupled with the relaxing sound of nature, can be the perfect backdrop for a summer study session.
Connect with classmates
Plan some casual meetups with classmates. This could be a picnic, a hike, or a relaxed coffee date. Use these get-togethers as a chance to casually discuss academic interests, business ideas, or exciting innovations. You'll be surprised how much you can learn from these casual interactions.
Embrace the detours
Lastly, remember that it's okay to stray from your plan. Enjoy that unplanned day trip or that sudden desire to just chill and do nothing. It's these spontaneous moments that often make for the best summer memories.
There you have it. That’s how I manage to recharge over the summer while staying on track academically. It's not about trading one for the other, but rather, intertwining the two in a delightful dance. So here's to a summer of academic growth, personal rejuvenation, and a whole lot of sun-soaked fun! Remember, it's your summer – make it count!
