Alexander Thomas Hamling
MSc Marketing Management Practice
Member of the Dean's List, class of 2022
Alexander earned his place on the Dean’s List for his active pursuit of opportunities to enhance and diversify his skillset, as well as his support for others’ development and wellbeing.
Leading the way
Praised for his commitment and dedication in his role with Alliance Events, Alexander’s managers commended him as a “key leader” in the team. In this position, he gained experience at events across the country, making time-sensitive decisions, working under pressure and cooperating with others on large-scale projects.
His successful leadership skills were also present in his role as Team Leader of the five-person Sheffield team in the University Business Challenge, reaching the Grand Final of the competition. During the six-week competition, he further developed his accounting, strategy and critical-thinking skills whilst learning to motivate and listen to his fellow team members.
Alexander demonstrated a consistent focus on further personal development while studying at Sheffield. He completed Chartered Institute of Marketing webinars to complement his studies, and was an active member of the Management Society. To prepare himself for the pressures and complexities of working life, he worked with a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner to learn new tools and techniques to manage his anxiety.
Making valuable connections
Alexander clearly has a passion for helping others. He voiced student concerns and feedback as an Academic Representative for the MSc Marketing Management Practice programme throughout his studies. He also represented the postgraduate student voice on a wider University-level in inter-Faculty meetings, as a Faculty Representative.
Alexander linked his academic studies with a cause he connects to on a personal level - the Lego Foundation Braille Bricks initiative, run in partnership with the Royal National Institute of Blind People. He contacted the Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind (SRSB) to pass on information about the initiative, so that the SRSB children’s educational group, Little Sparklers, could benefit from the scheme.
After graduation
After completing his degree, Alexander successfully secured a graduate-level role as a Content Writer at Sheffield-based manufacturing company OSL Group Holdings Ltd.
