Adam Fear
BA Business Management with Employment Experience
Member of the Dean's List, class of 2023
A great sport!
Adam has contributed significantly towards his community and to his own employability during his time at Sheffield. Having previously volunteered as a coach for his local football team for the three years before University, Adam maintained his dedication to the sport during his studies by completing his FA Level 1 qualifications in Football Coaching and Talent Identification. To support his community, Adam returned to his secondary school to deliver a talk about his university experience, highlighting why SUMS was “perfect” for him. He returned again as a sports coach at his secondary school’s Holiday Club for children across Nottingham.
During the pandemic, Adam didn’t let the lockdowns stop him! He started his own small business selling vintage clothing whereby he learnt the importance of skills such as costing and stock management, sales and marketing. He also participated in sponsored runs and coordinated a 24-Hour Charity Event with his friends to raise money for the Covid-19 Relief Fund.
Widening perspectives
Adam went out of his way to broaden his worldview, by applying for a Global Scholarship Award. After successfully obtaining a place to study Leadership and Teamwork at Alberta University, Canada, the course was postponed due to Covid-19. Adam persevered and was rewarded for his efforts in summer 2022 when he successfully secured a Global Scholarship to study Sports Marketing and Sponsorship at Aarhus University, Denmark. The experience pushed him out of his comfort zone and enabled him to learn about a different culture. At the end of the course in Denmark, Adam was awarded the highest possible grade on his examination.
Adam has been an active part of University life in Sheffield throughout his time here. As a member of the Ultimate Frisbee squad for two years, he reached the second team and represented the University in the sport. He worked a busy part-time role in Code Nightclub, where he improved his efficiency and time management skills when working under pressure.
His placement year as Project Support Executive at Affixxius Films allowed Adam to produce his own projects and gain experience across finance, marketing, event management and sales. He put himself forward to take responsibility for collating the company’s business proposals, and then taught himself to use design software to create professional documents. To supplement his work experience, Adam completed a Social Media Marketing Certification with HubSpot online courses.
Supporting fellow students
After returning to the University, Adam supported fellow students as a Mentor and also as a Placement Ambassador in the Employability Hub. He also gained transferable skills in his role as a Student Ambassador over four years at the Management School, where he opted to deliver speeches to prospective and current students in order to improve his confidence and develop his public speaking skills.
Upon graduating with first class honours, Adam secured a graduate role as Student Engagement Manager at the sustainable volunteering organisation, Challenges Abroad.
