The EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Machining, Assembly and Digital Engineering for Manufacturing (MADE4Manufacturing) is a collaboration between the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Sheffield and the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC), along with many Industrial Partners. This new centre builds on the success of the EPSRC Industrial Doctorate Centre in Machining Science.

The centre offers EngDs and PhDs across a range of themes relating to Machining, Assembly and Digital Engineering, and the first cohort of four will begin in September 2025.

Our focus is on integrating digital tools into important manufacturing methods that are critical for the UK, such as subtractive manufacturing (like machining) and product assembly. We teach students how to become leaders in understanding the impact of carbon emissions and climate change (carbon literacy). They also learn to balance economic and sustainable productivity, understanding the trade-offs between making things cost-effective and environmentally friendly. Additionally, students gain a big-picture view of how every stage of the production process affects sustainable manufacturing.
