New additions to the Centre for Machine Intelligence team

We at the Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) are delighted to announce a significant expansion, marking a new chapter for us, and the extension of our support of the AI community.

CMI new staff TL DD

The Centre for Machine Intelligence is a strategic initiative supported by a £3.6m University of Sheffield investment, dedicated to the transformation and acceleration of research, innovation, and education on and with AI.  As part of our expansion we are welcoming a talented and diverse group of new staff members, each bringing their unique skills, expertise and experience to our team.

Professor James Marshall is Director for the Centre and we are progressing our recruitment for interdisciplinary academic theme leads in AI.  Dr Susan Oman has recently started in her role as Senior Lecturer and Theme Lead in AI and In/equality.  Susan brings an exciting and fresh perspective to the Centre and will focus on the broad theme of human-centric AI.  She is building collaborations across and beyond the University, at home and abroad, with a focus on the social impact of AI.  The recruitment for three further CMI academic positions (theme leads in AI for Materials, AI for Health and Robotics and Autonomous Systems) and three Academic Fellows in AI is progressing well and we hope to have news for these posts very soon!

We are also thrilled to announce appointments to key internal roles for the CMI: Dr James Law is our new Deputy Director.  James has extensive experience working in the field of trustworthy autonomous systems and human robot co-working, particularly in manufacturing contexts.  Taking on the roles of cross-cutting theme leads are Dr. Mahnaz Arvaneh (AI-Powered Spinouts and Entrepreneurship), Dr. Sean Anderson (Upskilling in AI and Data Science) and Dr. Morgan Jones, (Supporting Digital Education).

Welcome to all!
