Dr Susan Oman represents Sheffield at India AI Impact Summit 2026

Dr Susan Oman, the Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) Lead for AI and In/quality, has been in New Delhi this week as part of the official UK delegation for the India AI Impact Summit 2026.

Susan Oman meeting David Lammy

The delegation, organised by the British Council and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, provides a significant platform to showcase UK excellence in AI. Since the inaugural summit at Bletchley Park, the UK has remained a central player in global talks on AI safety. Dr Oman is representing the University of Sheffield to ensure that inclusive research and the public voice remain at the heart of the global conversation.

Leading the Dialogue on AI Literacy

Throughout the week, Dr Oman has led a diverse programme of activity. This included chairing a roundtable on AI and the public, as well as contributing to a panel discussion regarding AI literacy in Higher Education and the vital importance of interdisciplinarity in teaching.

Based at the UK Pavilion and the High Commissioner’s residence, she has been exhibiting the National AI Awareness Campaign. Her "Let’s Talk AI" project ran throughout the week at the Pavilion and featured as a highlight of the UK AI Showcase & Reception.

Shaping Global Policy

Dr Oman also presented at the Participatory AI Research & Practice Symposium (PAIRS), an event she organises. There, she shared insights from both the national campaign and the Public Voices in AI project with both in-person and online international audiences.

The impact of Sheffield’s research was highlighted by high-level engagements during the summit:

  • Wednesday: Dr Oman introduced the campaign to AI Minister, Kanishka Narayan.
  • Friday: Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy visited the UK Pavilion to hear about the AI Awareness Campaign.
  • Friday Evening: Dr Oman delivered a TED-style talk at the High Commission reception, ensuring Sheffield’s research continues to shape a future for AI that is grounded in real people's experiences.
