The Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) is pleased to announce Dr. Denis Newman-Griffis as the new AI-Enabled Research Lead (in AI for Health).
Dr. Newman-Griffis (they/them) is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and AI-Enabled Research Theme Lead in the CMI, University of Sheffield. Denis is also a British Academy Innovation Fellow and a Research Fellow of the Research on Research Institute. Denis was formerly a Visiting Fellow of the US National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, and was a Lecturer in Data Science in the Information School, University of Sheffield, from 2022 to 2024.
Their award-winning work at the nexus of AI, health, and disability investigates the technologies, skills, and practices involved in developing more effective and equitable AI. Denis is a leading interdisciplinary expert in AI for human functioning and disability, from development of innovative natural language processing technologies to critical analysis of disability representation in AI design.
Denis’ research has been funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, The British Academy, the US National Library of Medicine, the Healthy Lifespan Institute, and the University of Sheffield, and they are actively engaged in dialogue on responsible AI and health with policymakers and diverse publics.
