The Centre for Machine Intelligence (CMI) is pleased to announce Dr. Susan Oman as the new Human-Centric Theme Lead (in AI for In/equality).
Dr. Oman is a Senior Lecturer in Data, AI & Society, and Human-Centric AI Theme Lead in the CMI, University of Sheffield. Susan held a two-year policy-research fellowship within the UK Government’s Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport from 2022 to 2024.
Her research investigates data, AI, evidence, policy and practice - and how they work for the publics they claim to serve. These are often in relation to specific social policy issues, like ‘well-being’ or ‘inequality’ or ‘digital’.
Her innovative arts and humanities research approaches of ‘following the data’ and ‘re-performance’ reveal the hidden workings of the social and data sciences, to uncover the impacts of structural inequalities and seek policy solutions that are more equitable. These approaches also provide a means to communicate complex ideas and systems to diverse publics.
Please join us in extending a warm welcome to Dr. Susan Oman as she takes on this pivotal role within our Centre for Machine Intelligence!
