Professor Mahnaz Arvaneh

Profile

Mahnaz Arvaneh is Professor of Intelligent Human–Machine Interfaces at the University of Sheffield and Director of the Physiological Signals and Systems Laboratory. Her research develops AI-powered, user-centred neurotechnologies and human–machine interfaces for rehabilitation, healthcare, and performance. With expertise in brain–computer interfaces, neural signal processing, and machine learning, she focuses on creating adaptive, closed-loop systems that can be translated into real-world clinical and commercial impact.

She also serves as Theme Lead for AI-Powered Entrepreneurship in CMI, where she supports the development of innovative AI solutions with strong translational and commercial potential. Her commercialisation projects include TeleRegain, an AI-powered home-based stroke rehabilitation technology, and StimDose, an AI-driven platform for personalised brain stimulation. 

Alongside her research and innovation activities, Mahnaz has also contributed to discussions with policymakers on the future of neural interfaces and emerging neurotechnologies, helping shape wider thinking around responsible innovation, impact, and adoption. Her contributions to neuroscience, innovation, and leadership have also been recognised through her selection as a finalist for the UK Women in Neuroscience Interdisciplinary Leader of 2025 award.
