Profile

James is Deputy Director of the Centre for Machine Intelligence, and holds a joint appointment between the School of Computer Science and the Integrated Manufacturing Group within the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre. He is a roboticist with a background spanning control engineering, multi-robot systems, cognitive robotics, and human-robot interaction. From 2014-2025 he was an executive board member at Sheffield Robotics, holding positions as Director of Operations, and Director of innovation and Knowledge Exchange. From 2014-2023 he was an Elected Member of the EPSRC UK-RAS network executive committee, and Lead for Public Engagement and Outreach, leading the National School Robot Competition from 2018-2021. From 2020-2025 James was an appointed member of the EPSRC Early Career Forums in Manufacturing and Engineering, and the sole cross-forum member. He was a member of the White Rose Robotics Leadership Group (2020-2024), and has been the University’s representative to euRobotics since 2015. 

He has authored and contributed to UK-RAS White Papers on Manufacturing robotics, Ethics of Robotics and AI, and Skills and Education for Robotics and AI, and to Government Office for Science Rapid Tech Reviews in Humanoid Robotics and Robotics. James has won awards for his work in multi-robot systems, developmental robotics, robotic safety, and public engagement. He led a successful campaign to have the Olympic Torch carried in memory of Alan Turing and was the main consultant on the BBC Radio 1 robot takeover.  He is a TEDx speaker, and has given robotics talks at the European Parliament and at international Embassies. He is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer at Twinality, a company providing digital twinning tools that enable users to design, certify, and manage safer robotic systems.
