Research Project: Development of 3D printable strain-hardening cementitious composites using limestone calcined clay cement for additive constructions

My research project mainly contains 3 related topics, which are 3D concrete printing (3DCP) technology, strain-hardening cementitious composites (SHCC) and limestone calcined clay cement (LC3). 3DCP refers to an emerging additive construction process in which specific concrete materials are extruded layer by layer based on a digital model to build a complex structure without using any formwork. SHCC is mainly composed of cement, supplementary cementitious materials, sand, fiber, and admixtures, which possesses high tensile, shear, and flexural strengths with strain-hardening behaviour and superior crack control capability with multiple-cracking characteristics. LC3 is a new type of low-carbon cement that partially replaced the cement clinker with a combination of calcined clay, limestone powder, and gypsum, which has significant potential for reducing carbon emissions and improving sustainability of concrete structures. My project is to combine the 3 topics to contribute to the sustainable development of the construction industry.
