Profile

Lewis graduated from the University of Sheffield in 2020 with an MEng in Civil and Structural Engineering before spending time in industry as a graduate consultant engineer. He re-joined the department as a PhD researcher in the Blast and Impact group in 2022. Lewis' research focuses on understanding the effects of close proximity blast loading and resultant structural response to better protect against explosive threats.

Research Project: Characterising Structural Response to Near-Field Blast Loading

Structures in close proximity to an explosive charge experience loading of not just high magnitude and short time duration, but also extremely variability. If protective systems are to operate effectively against explosive threats, then the potential variability of loading and its influence on protective structures must be characterised.

This project seeks to map the mechanisms of variability in near-field blast loading and the resultant structural response, using both numerical and experimental methods. The prime aim being to develop rapid analysis tools incorporating probabilistic methods, which can be used by blast protection engineers to appraise protective structures and help save lives.
