Research Project: Investigation Of Sinkhole Triggering Processes

The British Geological Survey has been collecting data with respect to timing and distribution of sinkhole events, but more mechanical understanding is required to model the likelihood of occurrence.

This PhD focuses on exploring the geotechnical properties of materials and mechanisms involved in the development of sinkholes.

This includes finding the hydraulic conditions leading to suffosion of sediments above sinkholes and the growth, weakening and failure of rock voids due to dissolution.

Emphasis is placed on understanding the role of long term antecendent weather conditions in triggering sinkholes.
