Profile

Emily Jane Blackburn is a PhD student at the University of Sheffield exploring the environmental contaminant PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) and its risk to surface water in the UK.

In 2024, Emily earned a master’s degree in Analytical Science and Instrumentation from the University of Warwick, graduating with distinction. Their master’s thesis explored PFAS contamination of a Thames River sediment core, using ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry to reveal its contents.

This PhD student’s passion for the environment extends beyond research, as they actively engage in community volunteering, including litter-picking and removing invasive plant species (Himalayan Balsam). After a long day of researching PFAS, Emily unwinds with a nice book or a calming game of Stardew Valley.
