Edward John

Edward studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Sheffield, developing a passion for research and experimental work while developing and testing a novel vibration isolation system for his final year project. Following this, Edward worked at SNC-Lavalin Aitkins Rail Consulting in Derby for two years where he was involved in a wide range of rolling stock projects.

Edward’s PhD research at the University of Sheffield focused on understanding the processes that cause cast iron water distribution pipes to develop leaks, with the aim of improving pipe condition assessment practices. This research used novel destructive fatigue experiments to show that the shape of corrosion pits in cast iron water distribution pipes can significantly affect the fatigue strength and leakage failure mode of these pipes.

In his current role, Edward is investigating whether there is a link between large-diameter water distribution pipe failures and road traffic and surface conditions. Failures of these large-diameter pipes can cause significant water supply disruptions, as well as localised flooding and damage to road infrastructure, making understanding and preventing such failures a priority for water network managers.
