Mr Jonny Hirst

Jonny joined the teaching staff at the University of Sheffield in 2024 with a focus on teaching the practical aspects of structural engineering design. Jonny’s primary focus will be on two modules, the Reuse of Existing Buildings, and the Integrated Design Project, where he will use his years of experience in industry to help the students move from a theoretical understanding of engineering to its practical application.

Before entering the workforce Jonny was a student at the University of Sheffield. Upon graduation he joined Eastwood CE (formerly Eastwood and Partners) where he gained experience in the residential, commercial, industrial, ecclesiastic, education, and water/wastewater sectors. In 2022 Jonny set up his own Structural Engineering Consultancy (Birch Grove Engineering), where he currently works part time as Managing Director, alongside its sister company (Birch Grove Architecture).
