Dr John Cripps

John Cripps is a Senior Lecturer in engineering geology. He graduated in Geology and Physics University of Aston (1970) and gained an MSc (1971) and a PhD (1977) from the University of Durham. He transferred to his present post from Department of Earth Sciences in 1999.

He is a Fellow of the Geological Society (FGS) and a Chartered Geologist (C.Geol). He received the Geological Society Engineering Group award in 1992.

His current research interests centre on the engineering behaviour of mudrocks, with particular reference to the prediction of the effects of weathering processes on engineering behaviour.

The work has been applied to the stability of slopes, the construction of the Carsington Dam and the use of colliery waste for the construction of landfill liners.

Current research also includes projects on groundwater contamination in the Wolverhampton area, mobilisation of arsenic in agricultural and contaminated soils, the planning and restoration of hard rock quarries, the interaction of pyrite bearing clays with concrete foundations and the characterisation of sulphur compounds in structural fills.

He has published 53 articles, 7 edited books, 20 abstracts and 30 industrial reports to date. Significant contributions have been made to various construction projects, including a 16km long deep sewer tunnel in Sheffield, foundation instability and re-construction of the Carsington Dam, Derbyshire and the investigation of thaumasite sulfate attack of concrete.
