Come and get an introduction to computer coding with Python in the Digital Commons @IC, with our new events we are running in May.

Whatever subject you might be studying, learning some coding can give you some fantastic transferable skills.

  • Boost and develop your problem-solving skills
  • Enhance your data literacy
  • Unlock your creativity & innovation
  • Better understand the digital world (even with AI!)

We will be using the very widely adopted Python language. Python is a great language to learn because:

  • It's easy to learn
  • Python skills are in high demand
  • It is used across a very wide range of disciplines - everything from humanities, economics and data science, to web development, robotics and AI. It is also used to power large social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and many more

We are running new sessions primarily aimed at beginners in the Digital Commons

You don't need to have any experience at all, as these are aimed for complete beginners.

We are also looking for co-facilitators to help build out and run our sessions in the future - see the section on Coding mentors below.

Introductory courses

These will be taught sessions where instructors will introduce you to many of the core concepts in coding, and guide you through practical examples that you can  try as you learn.

Coding Club

For people who prefer to jump in and work through online self paced tutorial exercises, we will provide an informal environment for you to come and work alongside others, and we will have facilitators there to help out

These sessions are all standalone - there is no prerequisite for you to attend any one before the other, and you can attend some or all in any order you wish.

Booking is essential as numbers will be limited. The sessions will take place in the Digital Commons, Room 1.20 in the Information Commons. Please bring a laptop if you have one, or we can lend you one on the day.

To book on the sessions

Follow the link to the online calendar and booking page below. Please note that we will only have a few sessions over the summer, but will be timetabling more as we approach the academic year.

Would you like to become a Coding mentor?

We are looking to recruit a community of  people to act as coding mentors as we build up the coding club for the future. We are looking for any member of the University - staff or students - who would like to come and contribute to our evolving activities. You don't have to be an expert, you just have to have an interest in developing the group going forward, and a willingness to help others. You will have the opportunity to get experience in mentoring other learners, and we are also really interested in people who want to develop new areas to offer in the course - whether that's creative coding, data science, AI, robotics or anything else!
