The School of Law

The School of Law has an international reputation for excellence in research, the expertise of its staff, and the achievement of its graduates. Our vision is to advance the interdisciplinary understanding of law, socio-legal studies and criminology, combining outstanding research with innovative research-led teaching. The School hosts three research centres: The Centre for Criminological Research (CCR), the Sheffield Centre for International and European Law (SCIEL) and the Sheffield Institute of Corporate and Commercial Law (SICCL).

The School is a particularly friendly department with a dedicated home in Bartolomé House, a Grade II listed building, close to the main campus and library with easy access to the city centre and adjacent to three local parks. 

The total student body numbers around 1,100 undergraduates and 200 postgraduates, studying on six undergraduate and three postgraduate taught programmes, plus our community of postgraduate research students. We encourage all undergraduate students to spend a year abroad with one of our partners, and we have structured those degree programmes to facilitate this aspiration. The School’s civic engagement activities connect it with the city of Sheffield, and with partners in the commercial, public and third sectors, nationally and internationally. Our wide-ranging pro bono work enriches our students’ experience and promotes an ethic of service to justice shared by staff, students, alumni and other supporters of the School.
