Congratulations on securing your place to study Music with us - we can’t wait to meet you! On this page you’ll find useful information and tasks to help make your transition to university as smooth as possible.
Your checklist
Complete your registration
The first thing you need to do is complete your registration.
Fire Safety and Out of Hours Training
One of the key facilities you will be needing access to is the Soundhouse - our dedicated practice facility and recording studios. To ensure you have access to these on your U-Card you will need to have completed the online training in Out of Hours working and Fire Safety training. Students who have not completed this training will not have access to the building before 8.30am, after 6pm or at the weekends.
Fill in your tuition form
All first year undergraduate students registered on a Music degree are eligible to receive 18 hours of instrumental or vocal tuition from a tutor allocated by the Department. To assist us in finding a suitable instrumental tutor for you as swiftly as possible, please complete our Instrumental Tuition Form prior to arriving in Sheffield and preferably by Friday 11th September 2026. Instrumental tuition is not compulsory; if you do not want to take performance, and have no interest in taking lessons with a specialist instrumental tutor, just let us know and we will not allocate you lessons.
Complete your Digital Induction
My Digital Induction is a guide to the apps and software you will use at Sheffield. You should complete this before you arrive to make sure you know how to access everything you need.
You will receive a lot of emails during your time at University, so it’s also important that you learn how to effectively manage your University inbox making sure that you don’t miss any important information.

As the Head of School, I’d like to welcome you to our academic community and wish you many congratulations for the achievements that brought you to us. For some of you, this may be a completely new experience in a new department, in a new university, city and country. In all cases, we are really looking forward to welcoming you. Digital Skills and Services
This session is mandatory for all music undergraduates.
Time: 10am-11pm
Location: Richard Roberts Auditorium
Learn about key services, systems and websites that will help you navigate your studies with us at the University of Sheffield.
Music Technology and Health and Safety Session
This session is mandatory for all music undergraduates.
Time: 11am to 12pm
Location: 9 Mappin Street, Seminar Room G14
Campus mapsLearn about important Health and Safety expectations, as well as systems such as Connect2, and how you hire equipment and book rooms in the Soundhouse and Jessop Building.
Introduction to your Music programme
Time: 1 to 2pm
Location: To be confirmed - check your timetable for more details
This session will provide an introduction to the Music programme and key skills that will help you transition from your previous level of study to studying for a degree. There will be an opportunity for questions and answers too.- Wednesday 23 September 2026
More Than A Degree Fair
Time: Drop-in between 10:30am to 12pm
Location: Jessop Building
Campus mapsYour music degree enables you to participate in the music scene at Sheffield and the wide range of University and community activities that are available. We've invited representatives from the Music Ensembles, Music Societies, Student Staff committee, Music Society, Music in the City and Music in the Round to attend the School so you can meet some of the specialist groups that you can be part of. The key Music Societies will hold auditions in the very first weeks so find out more about the audition process at this event.
Tour of Music facilities - Jessop Building and SoundHouse
Time: Between 10am-12pm - check your timetable for more details
A tour of all of the music facilities you will be using during your degree.
Languages Fair
Time: Drop-in between 1:30pm to 4pm
Location: Diamond BasementInterested in learning a language alongside your degree? Come along to find out more!

Location: Richard Roberts AuditoriumCome along to find out more about support within the School and across the University.
Manual Handling Training
This session is mandatory for all music undergraduates.
Time: 12pm-1pm or 1pm-2pm (check your timetable)
Location: Jessop Building
Campus mapsAll music undergraduate students have to undertake manual handling training to ensure that movement of instruments and equipment are in accordance with health and safety guidelines.

Student Voice and Employability
Time: 10am-11am
Location: Richard Roberts AuditoriumThis session will explain how you can engage with our School community, have an impact on your programme, and prepare for your future career.
There is also a programme of events run via the Students' Union.
