Timetables and course dates
Information on timetables and course dates for language learning.
Overview
Teaching follows the university's two-semester structure, the dates of which are available on the Current and future semester dates page. In the Autumn semester, teaching begins in Week 1 (week commencing 28th September) and we have a reading week (where there is no teaching) in week 7.
Student timetables
The Student timetables page (Student hub access required) contains essential guidance on viewing your timetable and who to contact if you need assistance. This includes information on iSheffield, the University of Sheffield app which you will use to view your timetable and register your attendance.
You will be able to view your timetable via iSheffield once you are registered on your chosen module(s).
If you are not yet registered, you can access timetabling information for the School of Languages, Arts and Societies via the link below:
Languages, Arts and Societies teaching timetable (2026-27)
Teaching timetables are provisional and subject to change until the start of the semester. Individual modules are occasionally updated or withdrawn in response to variations in staff or student numbers. In the event of any change we'll inform students in good time and take reasonable steps to minimise disruption.
Student fitting and groups
The automatic student fitting process is run at regular intervals in the weeks leading up to the start of the semester, and it may be that your modules are not all fitted at the same time, or that you see partial scheduling. For example, you may see your seminar in your timetable but not your tutorial. Please be assured that we are working to complete your timetable fitting, and any outstanding taught sessions will appear in your timetable shortly afterwards.
If you are an existing student at the university, you will automatically be placed into taught sessions which fit your timetable.
If you are a member of the public, a PhD student or a member of staff, you will be sent a Group Preference Form upon your successful application to one of our courses.
At Beginner levels in our more popular languages, such as French, German and Spanish, we usually endeavour to have some evening sessions that will run to suit people who are unable to make daytime sessions. However, this is not a guarantee and is less likely for our smaller languages.
Timetable clashes
You will be automatically fitted to seminar and tutorial groups to fit your timetable, however if you do find that you have a clash, please complete the LAS Module Clash Report Form to let us know about this.
Please note that as full time students are expected to be available for teaching between the hours of 09:00 and 18:00 Monday to Friday, we are unable to consider requests to resolve non-teaching clashes involving recreational activities (outside Wednesday afternoons) or changes based on personal preference for other dates and times when your timetable confirms you are available at the times allocated for your language taught sessions.
Occasional clashes
You may experience occasional clashes in your timetable, for example where there are ad hoc events scheduled or some of your modules vary from week to week. In these circumstances, we will look to fit you to the class group which minimises these clashes. If you are unable to attend one of our seminars or tutorials due to a one-off clash or other reason such as illness, please notify your tutor (you do not need to complete the clash reporting form).
Please note that, unless notified otherwise, students must only attend the seminars and tutorials that are shown in their timetable.
Invigilated examination timetable
The exact date of individual exams is usually published by the University's Student Examinations Team one month before the start of the examination period. The dates of examinations cannot be changed.
