Improving disability equality for staff

At the start of our journey to improve the experiences of our disabled staff, we sought colleagues' feedback. We listened to this feedback and have made changes to support our community.

As part of our commitment to supporting disability inclusion for staff, our policies, guidance and wellbeing provisions focus on creating an inclusive work environment where all staff can thrive.

Read below about some of the support that is available for all colleagues across the University.

Support through the Staff Disability Adviser Service

Colleagues can access specialist and confidential advice and support through our in-house Staff Disability Adviser Service. At their appointment, they can discuss their disability-related query and receive advice and signposting to a range of services and support.

Reasonable adjustments

Reasonable adjustments are one form of support for colleagues and are alterations that can be made to enable them to continue with their role.

We worked with colleagues to develop resources that cover how to request and review reasonable adjustments.

Access to Work scheme

We are committed to helping staff get the support they need. Access to Work is a government support programme that can provide practical and financial support for those with a disability or long-term physical or mental health condition. Through the programme, disabled staff can access specialist assessments, recommendations for reasonable adjustments, and financial support.

Business Disability Forum membership

We are a member of the Business Disability Forum. This membership gives managers access to expert advice and support, knowledge, resources, and opportunities to share best practices with other organisations. This skill and knowledge sharing will help us to improve our understanding, and to learn more about how we can remove barriers across the University that could prevent our disabled staff and students from thriving.

Line manager toolkits

Practical guidance, resources and tools are available to support line managers in creating an open, inclusive, accessible and supportive working environment.

Report + Support

Report and Support allows staff and students to report concerns, anonymously or with their contact details, about an experience they have had or witnessed at the University.
