Journalism Studies alumni Vayam has gone on to work as a Content and Strategy Lead for City Xtra Ltd after graduating.
Tell us about your journey after graduating from your degree
I moved to London a month after graduating from university, with my final project commissioned by The Times of London and a foot in the door of one of the most prestigious and sought-after newsrooms in the UK. I freelanced my way through London during my first six months in the city. I've since made the leap of working as a content and strategy lead for City Xtra Ltd.
How did your time in Sheffield set you up for your career?
I made friends with dozens of editors in London because my Journalism personal tutor taught me the importance of making friends in the industry. Sheffield taught me to write my own story, to be my own protagonist, to be my own role model and work today to love my future self.
My tutors gave me great counsel throughout, and I can offer a glowing verdict on my course content too, it really pushed me out of my comfort zone - particularly vox popping on news days, which killed any and all fear of rejection I had. My time on placement with the Sunday Mirror's news and features team was also a real turning point.
What did you think of Sheffield as a city?
Sheffield somehow emerged at the intersection of everything I'd have wanted in a city where I'd go to university - lush green, walkable despite the hills, Bole Hills, nice food and drink scene, a very diverse social construct - I fell in love with the place a week out of quarantine in 2020.
