Academic clinical fellowships in histopathology
As the gold standard test for cancer diagnosis, histopathology is a unique speciality which is perfectly placed for tissue-based research including biomarker research and a translational bridge for fundamental research.
Our research
The academic clinical fellowships are based in cancer research. Sheffield leads on pathology and translational research for clinical trials including:
- GUSTO – A world-first multicentre RCT (NIHR/MRC EME) investigating gene expression subtyping for personalised neoadjuvant chemo and immunotherapy in muscle invasive bladder cancer.
- INVEST – A phase 1 study investigating the safety of intra-vesical immunotherapy in bladder cancer. Histopathology lead the associated translational and biomarker discovery work.
- IMPRoVE – A YCR funded prostate cancer screening trial that includes evaluation of polygenic risk scores.
- EVIDENT – A YCR funded study investigating ex-vivo culture and high-throughput drug screening of primary cancer tissue samples to generate personalised drug response profiles.
Academic clinical fellows can pursue research in biomarker discovery, development and validation using samples collected in these trials. Research methods include molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics and digital pathology. This research is highly collaborative and there are strong links with fundamental science groups, computer vision, clinical academic specialities including surgery and oncology, and industry partners. The facilitates excellent training in research methods.
