Welcome to new students from the Vice President and Head of the Faculty of Health

To mark the beginning of the academic year, Professor Tracey Moore (Vice President and Head of the Faculty of Health) shares her official welcome for our incoming students and apprentices, including three top tips for the year ahead.

Professor Tracey Moore

Hello and welcome to the University of Sheffield. I’m so pleased that you’re joining our Faculty of Health community.

A lot has led up to this moment. From writing personal statements and attending interviews to taking exams, I know how much hard work and dedication it's taken for you to get here.

Starting university is a significant milestone - one which can feel nerve-wracking at times - but whatever led you to Sheffield I promise you that you’re in the right place. The city has something for everyone, and there’s plenty of societies and clubs for you to get involved in. If you’re feeling unsure in these first few weeks then give something a go; I recently took up kickboxing and I have no regrets!

There are a number of support services you can tap into during your time here too, from employability and academic support to pastoral care. These services are for everyone, whether you’re studying on campus, completing your degree online or doing an apprenticeship.

I started my nurse training at Chesterfield Royal Hospital in 1979 back when it was hospital based, so my experience of university life is admittedly a little different than it is now. But I wanted to share three top tips to help you on your university journey:

  1. Take every opportunity that comes your way. For some of you, this is your very first experience of higher education. This is going to be such an exciting time for you and my advice is to grasp every opportunity you can. Explore the city, put yourself out there and try new things. Whether you volunteer as a student representative or try out for a sports team, you never know where these experiences will take you.
  2. Ask for help if you need it. It can feel scary to ask for help, but at the end of the day you’re here to learn and your tutors don’t expect you to have all the answers. The staff at Sheffield are here to support you, so don’t be afraid to reach out and make use of them.
  3. Preparation is everything. University is so much more than just your degree, but you should still try your best when it comes to attending lectures and placements and completing your assignments. Give yourself plenty of time to do your coursework or sign off your competencies so you don’t feel rushed. And as always, ask for help if you need it!

Most of all, though, enjoy your time at Sheffield!

I wish you all a successful year ahead, and I look forward to meeting many of you over the next few weeks and months. If I can ever be of any help to you during your university journey please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.

With very best wishes,

Tracey
