Stewart's story

Stewart wanted to study medicine because he wanted to help people — to care for patients directly. But coming from a low-income family, the prospect of supporting himself through five years of studies was daunting. Stewart worried that his financial circumstances might stop him from getting the grades he knew he was capable of.

He moved forward expecting to work long hours to support his studies, but alumni donors helped to ease that pressure. Because of you, Stewart doesn’t have to choose between his education and financial stability.

And Stewart’s scholarship wasn’t just about the financial relief. It also bought him time.

Stewart spends up to 40 hours a week on clinical placements, while also dedicating time to independent study. Thanks to you, Stewart doesn’t have to spend his few free hours undertaking excessive hours of part-time work just to pay for rent.

Instead, Stewart has the flexibility to undertake work that aligns with his future goals. He provides private tutoring, managing his own hours around demanding placement and exam periods so that he can focus on his studies and achieve the best possible results.

Stewart’s also been able to take care of his mental and physical health. By joining a medics’ football team, he’s forged friendships, and you’ve helped him have a well-rounded university experience while also preventing burn out, keeping him sharp for his patients.

Supporters have inspired him to put his all into his future plans, and provided the opportunity to explore different specialities.

Stewart was able to travel to Nottingham for a specialist suturing course, an experience that prompted him to enter a suturing competition and sparked his ambition to become a surgeon.

Above all, Stewart’s scholarship gave him the confidence and belief to reach his potential. He’s excelling on his course, even achieving 100% on his anatomy exams..

With your backing, Stewart feels part of the Sheffield community, knowing alumni like you believe in him inspires Stewart to be the best doctor he can be.

“I love talking to patients and hearing their stories. I know it will make me a better clinician in the future. For me, medicine is all about caring for people, and I’m learning so much about the human side of medicine. It’s one of the things that Sheffield does best.

Next year, I hope to go to Guatemala for my medical elective, where I’ll get to fully experience clinical practice and work with patients and professionals.

This wouldn’t be possible without my scholarship, and words cannot describe how thankful I am for the help and encouragement for my degree in medicine.”

Stewart is well on his way to becoming a caring and well rounded doctor. Will you make a gift today and help the next Stewart to come to Sheffield next September?
