Fueled by those who believe in him
Harjeet never dared to dream big or take risks—he played it safe, sticking to what he knew. Growing up, he thought his future was set, content with a path that led him to follow in his dad’s footsteps as a mechanic. But after hearing an inspiring talk from a surgeon in his school, something inside him clicked. Harjeet discovered the courage to dream bigger, to pursue his passion for science, and to become the first in his family to attend university and study medicine.
Realising the road ahead would be challenging, Harjeet knew he needed support. Through hard work and dedication to his studies, he proved to Sheffield that he was a talent the University wouldn’t want to miss. Thanks to scholarships supported by Sheffield's supporter community, Harjeet was able to join the exceptional Sheffield community and begin his journey toward making his dreams a reality.
“I can say with certainty that the trajectory of my life has changed due to my scholarship. I would not be the person I am today without it and the experiences it has afforded me. I’ve been able to get involved with more surgeries later in the evenings, and have learned so many techniques and procedures. I’ve also had opportunities to present at conferences and immerse myself in university life, taking on the role of Treasurer in the Surgical Society.”
With continued support, Harjeet has travelled to hospital placements, attended conferences, and even presented his own research. These opportunities have boosted his confidence and expanded his expertise. Today, Harjeet is an exceptional and disciplined medical student, collaborating with top maxillofacial surgeons, building a portfolio for his surgical training, and shaping a future he once believed was beyond his reach.

Building a future to give back
The Sheffield supporter community has not only supported Harjeet financially and shared their expertise, but they’ve also demonstrated the profound impact that giving can have on someone’s life. Inspired by their generosity, Harjeet is dedicated to living a life of giving. He aspires to become a consultant head and neck surgeon, using his skills to volunteer for cleft lip and palate charities around the world. Just as he was supported on his journey, he hopes to inspire others to dream big and aim high, just as he did.
“It is so important that scholarships exist to allow those from underprivileged or widening participation backgrounds, such as myself, to set higher goals and realise the journey to achieve them. No matter how big or small a donation, it has such an impact on a student’s life like mine.”
