Meet Yanelle- “Studying engineering will be one of the best decisions you will ever make”

Why did you choose your course?

I chose my course as I wanted to do a degree that combines both maths and physics which I really enjoyed doing in school and engineering has many practical applications for this. Doing electrical and electronic engineering opens up many good opportunities where you can work in industries such as robotics, communications and the energy sector.

What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

I have really enjoyed doing labs throughout my degree as it is an opportunity for me to apply what I have learnt in lectures to real-life applications. For example, a project in my second year I worked on was creating a patch antenna for mobile communications from scratch. We did some of the labs in the clean room which was a very interesting and unique experience.

What advice would you give to a younger student considering studying your course at university?

My advice would be if you enjoy doing maths and physics in school but you don't want to do either of those subjects on their own, and you want to apply your knowledge after graduating, then studying engineering will be one of the best decisions you will ever make. It is a very rewarding degree and there are so many interesting things you learn about at university.

Why did you choose to study at Sheffield?

I chose to study in Sheffield as it has one of the best facilities in the country for engineering and it is also highly rated being part of the Russell group.

What are the best things about studying in your department?

One of the best things about my department is the lecturers. All of them are very approachable whenever I have any questions for them. I also enjoyed doing labs in the first year as it built a great foundation through my course which has been very helpful.

What did you like most about the city of Sheffield? Has your time at Sheffield met your expectations so far?

Sheffield is a very cosy city and it is somewhere where I feel relaxed. Coming from London which is significantly bigger, Sheffield has a nice student feel to it which I have really enjoyed so far. Sheffield is also close to the Peak District and has many beautiful parks which are still pretty close to the university considering Sheffield is a city campus.

Have you used any of the careers support services run by the university?

I have used Career Connect to find part-time jobs and look for internships as well. Using mySkills has also been really helpful when recording my experience throughout my degree.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I see myself working as an electrical engineer (I'm not quite sure where yet, and what sector!) and hopefully working towards being a chartered engineer.
