Profile

I am a researcher of digital literacies and videogames, focusing on agentive learning and layered meaning making across digital/nondigital practices. I am engaged in an ongoing, decade-long landmark longitudinal study wherein I explore cooperative competition and game-informed meaning making in public school mathematics classes. Overall, my work suggests that the nuances of digital worlds and practices can disrupt convention, promote social responsibility, and provide new avenues for pedagogical discovery.

Prior to joining Sheffield as a visiting professor, I was Professor of Adolescent Education at St. John’s University, where I served for 14 years and held roles including Director of the Curriculum and Instruction PhD program, as well as mentor to numerous students, some with whom I have co-authored publications. I continue to work with PhD students and maintain international collaborations, including my role as Research Fellow for the University of South Africa.
