The Discover course is a collaboration between the University of Sheffield and Museums Sheffield that has been supporting mature learners for more than a decade.
Over 300 students have completed the free short course, which is aimed at engaging people who do not have the standard entry requirements for a university degree - often this can include those who have English as a second language, have caring responsibilities, or have previously faced barriers to higher education.
The display showcases a range of personal objects that participants on the course use to prompt discussion and creativity. This could be a toy car that sparks memories of road trips and journeys to school, or a pencil pouch given as a gift, symbolising an early love of creative writing.
Through the stories told by personal objects, and the museum’s exhibits about the local area, the course hopes to make it easier to break down barriers and build confidence and belonging, making the path into higher education feel more achievable.
The display also features Ethel Maqeda’s African hut shaped coil woven basket.
It has become a cherished reminder to celebrate my heritage, the role of Indigenous knowledge, community and place-based education, and sustainability of African artistry”
Ethel Maqeda
Creative Writer and Discover Course Partner
Ethel, once a student on the Discover course, is now a Creative Writer and Course Partner, teaching recent students new ways of expressing themselves, with collaborative poetry from last year's course featuring alongside the display. “The Food of Liberation” emphasises the importance of access to education and the empowering role it plays.
Through the programme, learners receive one-to-one support and advice on course applications and studying at a university, and are guaranteed an interview for a degree with a foundation year when they finish the course. Over half of the participants who have taken part over the years went on to apply for a university place, continuing their journey in a range of fields.
The tutors made it fun and were hands on in answering questions around academia and life as a student. When my object was displayed at the Western Park Museum, I felt a deep sense of belonging and this is what the Discover course is about for me."
