As an integral part of the Confucius Institute’s activities, the Sino-English Corner (SEC) provides students from a variety of degree programmes learning English or Chinese with opportunities to practice their target language and learn more about the target culture.
During the second Sino-English Corner of this academic year, students learnt more about Mid-Autumn Festival, which took place on Thursday 1 October.
As part of this festival, families gather to admire what is believed to be the brightest moon of the year.
During the SEC, students were introduced to vocabulary and cultural information on the festival and traditional delicacies such as mooncakes, which are sampled over the festival. Both local and international students shared their experiences of this festival and particularly for our international students, how they would traditionally spend the holidays.
Our most recent Sino-English Corner discussed our shopping & spending habits, particularly as China has recently celebrated Golden Week; a week long national holiday which also helps boost the Chinese tourism market and gives many people a chance to make extended visits to family across the country.
Members of the Sino-English Corner were taught a variety of new vocabulary, measure words and example sentences that would be very useful when shopping during Golden Week.
