Presentation: Approaching Chinese as a Beginner
Chinese can seem complex and intimidating, but our presentation will break down the basics and reveal the beauty behind the characters and sounds. Whether you're considering learning Chinese or simply want to better understand the language, this session will provide you with the essential tools and insights to get started. We will explore the structure of the language, including its tonal nature and character-based writing system, making it easier to grasp for beginners.
Chinese Poetry in Translation
As part of this event, we’ll also delve into the rich tradition of Chinese poetry. Enjoy a special reading of classic and contemporary Chinese poems in translation, bringing the emotional depth and cultural significance of these works to life. This segment of the presentation will offer a glimpse into how language and culture intertwine in Chinese literary traditions, highlighting the timeless themes and unique perspectives that Chinese poets offer. There will also be a reading of local poets who themselves have 'responded' to ancient Chinese poems in their own native English!
