Why did you choose your course?

Throughout my time at school, I had an undying passion for the sciences, particularly favouring chemistry and physics. This was due to my fascination of how the world works and just how cohesive these two subjects are. Materials Science proved to be the perfect amalgamation of several disciplines.

What have you enjoyed most about your course so far?

Even since my very first semester at The University of Sheffield, sustainability has played a massive part in everything we learn. Sustainability within energy generation and material production has been a key theme that I have enjoyed throughout my time in Sheffield. As a result, a new-found love for nuclear engineering has blossomed.

What do you think about Sheffield as a city?

I fell in love with Sheffield the very first time I visited. Everything about this city made me feel so welcome and at home. Despite being the UK’s fifth largest city by population, there is such a strong feeling of community and I wouldn’t change anything about my second home.

Have you got any particular academic achievements or extra-curricular achievements you’d like to highlight?

For three years now I have been a member of my department’s society – MatSoc – and have been on the committee as social secretary for the last two of those years. My role entails organising events that each and every society member can get involved with and arranging sponsorship deals for the benefit of our members. I thoroughly enjoy what I do, and it feels great to be part of a team. I would highly recommend joining your departmental society and seeing what it has to offer.

What are your ambitions for the next few years?

Over the next few years, I am looking forward to diving deeper into the world of nuclear science, engineering and technology and am excited to see what the future holds. I hope to be a part of pioneering research into the safe and ethical disposal of spent nuclear fuel.

What would you you say to A Level students if they are considering studying engineering at University?

I encourage everybody considering engineering to really do their research and find something they will love and are passionate about. There are so many options to choose from, and it is hard to know what you will enjoy, but find something that juggles what you already know and love with something you think will be new and exciting.
