Rachel Kovacs, who is graduating this year, has been recognised for her talent and dedication in the field of STEM with a number of awards and nominations.
Rachel studied MEng Biomedical Engineering and did her industrial placement at GSK. She is now working at Abbott on the Operations Professional Development Programme.
Sheffield prepared me for the realities of industry and gave me the confidence to stop waiting for change and start creating it. For instance, after discovering women's health through a final year module, I independently organised the Women's Health Innovation Challenge, bringing together 50 students to tackle gaps in one of healthcare's most overlooked areas. This drive is what earned me recognition and brought me to where I am now, on the Operations Professional Development Programme at Abbott.”

Professor Joan Cordiner, Head of the School of Chemical, Materials, and Biological Engineering, said: “I am so proud of what our students achieve. Rachel’s hard work and dedication have rightfully earned her these fantastic awards and shortlist nominations. Rachel’s year in industry is a wonderful example of how our students apply their learning in the real world and bring that professional discipline back to their degrees. Congratulations, Rachel, we are absolutely thrilled for you!”
Awards won
Rachel was awarded the National Industrial Cadet Award to a student who has completed an outstanding placement year.
Speaking about the award Rachel said: “The award recognised LineLearn, my project at GSK, where I created a learning tool to help new starters navigate manufacturing. It was a meaningful reminder that engineering can have its greatest impact by enabling others to succeed.”
The IET Prize and IET Manufacturing Engineering Student Prize are awarded every year to outstanding students who are doing or have completed an IET Accredited University course. Rachel was nominated by Dr Nicola Green who leads our Biomedical Engineering degree programmes.
