Dr Karl Travis joins the Independent Advisory Committee for the Deep Borehole Demonstration Center (DBDC)

The Deep Borehole Demonstration Center has added three experts to its Independent Advisory Committee. Dr Karl Travis joins Emeritus Professor Neil Chapman, who is Chair of the committee.

The Independent Advisory Committee provides a range of expertise to the DBDC as work continues at its demonstration site near Cameron, Texas. Deep Isolation’s (OTCQB: DBHLmulti-year, at-depth, full-scale demonstration program officially launched at the DBDC with the January 2026 groundbreaking and is designed to generate data and operational experience that can strengthen the technical readiness and safety case for deep borehole disposal.

Karl's participation offers the DBDC the tremendous benefit of his extensive knowledge and experience in the deep borehole approach to isolating highly radioactive material from the biosphere for millions of years.  He's been an active contributor in the International Atomic Energy Agency's Coordinated Research Project from the beginning, and the DBDC is fortunate that he is lending his critical review and feedback to our plans.”

Dr Karl Travis is a Reader in Computational Physics and Nuclear Waste Disposal at the University of Sheffield in the UK. He has more than 30 years of research experience, including 20 years in nuclear waste management and deep borehole disposal. His recent work has focused on developing deep borehole disposal schemes for spent nuclear fuel, sealing and support materials, and numerical modeling. Karl is also a key member of the IAEA’s Coordinated Research Project on deep borehole disposal.
