Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi my name is Rosie and I’m originally from Milton Keynes. I studied art, maths and history at a local sixth form before coming to Sheffield to study architecture.

I became interested in the subject through a school design project exploring the new and old architecture within central London and found it was a topic which could really combine the different disciplines of my A Level subjects.

Outside of the course I enjoy playing the saxophone and cycling into the Peak District.

What made you choose the School of Architecture and Landscape?

It was the ethos of Sheffield's School of Architecture and Landscape which really drew me to study here. I liked how the school engaged with current issues and the close student-tutor contact.

The cooperative and lively studio culture was clear from when I visited on an open day and this was something I was really excited about.

What do you enjoy about the course?

Sheffield's studio culture is an aspect of the course which really drew me to study here. I really enjoy the friendly atmosphere within the Arts Tower and the social space it creates to encourage relationships across all year groups.

Within our two dedicated studio days the approachable tutors are on hand to offer advice and support. Meeting twice weekly forms both great relationships between others in your studio and with design tutors. It really is a lovely place to collaboratively create and share work.

What module have you enjoyed the most so far?

My favourite module throughout first and second year has been humanities. It is a really exciting module exploring how architecture engages with current social, political and economic issues.

This module engaged us with many new skills and gave us a great basis of knowledge on how Architecture has evolved. I have really enjoyed translating these ideas into my own studio design projects.

What do you do outside of your studies?

Outside of architecture I enjoy taking part in some of the University's great societies on offer. This past year I have really enjoyed being on the committee for the Zumba society and Students for Climate Action. I have found these a great way to meet people across a range of years and courses

Living in Sheffield I really appreciate how close it is to the Peak District and regularly walk or cycle into it at weekends which is nice to get out of the city!

What do you like about the University and about Sheffield?

Sheffield is such a friendly city and very welcoming of its students. The city has so many nice parks such as Weston Park next to the Arts Tower.

In the summer months it’s a lovely place to come and have lunch whilst in studio or the library and is always full of people having picnics. When visiting Sheffield I would really recommend visiting Forge Dam which is a lovely walk through Endcliffe Park and right on the edge of the Peak District.

Could you share some of your work?

This is some of my current second year studio work. It shows the P2 theatre project and P3 social housing project. Throughout second year we have studied an area of Sheffield called London Road and I have really enjoyed getting to understand both the cultures and communities which live in the neighbourhood.
