I enjoyed the work I was doing but I wanted more, and it was time for a change
Jodie Edwards
Landscape Architecture student
Landscape Architecture with Foundation Year BA
Jodie worked in SEN schools as a Teaching Assistant, and then in special mental health care homes. She also has children of her own. She enjoyed the work she was doing but wanted more, and it was time for a change. Jodie wasn't feeling fulfilled in her role, and wanted to develop her skills, knowledge and confidence.
What made you choose Sheffield School of Architecture and Landscape over other schools?
As a mature student with a family, moving wasn't an option for me. I am very lucky that Sheffield is within commuting distance, as it's reputation and geographic location would have made it a preference regardless.
How would you describe the atmosphere in the School to someone new?
Welcoming and supportive.
How did the foundation year benefit you/prepare you for your degree study?
It helped me understand what to expect from university life, and prepared me for the standard of academic work I would need to complete.
What did you enjoy most about the Foundation year?
I enjoyed meeting other people from similar backgrounds, and making connections with people across different disciplines.
What are the biggest challenges you've faced, and how have you overcome these?
Managing my time as a busy Mum can definitely be challenging! I have to consider University and study a job and prioritise it accordingly, or it gets pushed back and I run out of time.
What advice would you give to other mature students considering a return to education?
Do it. Your life experience will add a whole new depth to and appreciation of your studies and why you are there. It is never too late to make a change!
What do you plan to do after your degree?
Right now, I want to work in practice primarily. I'm also potentially interested in a career in research - we will see where the path goes!
Is there anything else you would like to share with us about your experience of being a mature student at the University of Sheffield?
Giving up a steady job and changing your life to come to university is a huge decision - but I'm so glad I did it. Sheffield has excellent support and initiatives for mature students, and I feel well supported in my education.
