Marko recently graduated from MLA Landscape Architecture. Here he tells us about his experience of the course and how it's helped him to translate his experience to real world opportunities.

How would you describe the atmosphere in the School to someone new?

Friendly and approachable. Both classmates and tutors are very nice and supportive. No matter if you have any questions, big or small, there’s always someone to ask for help.

What’s the balance between teaching time and independent working time like?

I guess it’s 50%/ 50% in undergraduate. Teaching time will include both design studio learning and tutorial sessions with tutors, while we are always encouraged to work at the design studio and learn from our peers.

Do you feel part of a wider community where you study?

Yes, I met friends in different years. Everyone is very willing to share their experience.

What are the facilities like in the School of Architecture and Landscape?

There is a wide range of facilities, including the recently opened workshop space for students to make physical models, while the 10/F computer room provides a big screen with design software packages installed.

What was the importance of field trips for you?

It allows us to see the landscape in person, explore the scale of design in real life. The best bit probably is doing quick sketches in front of a series of landscape projects/parks/gardens. Field trips also foster thinking and discussions of how design theory can eventually turn into real practice.

How have you found the style of assessment and feedback in the Sheffield School of Architecture and Landscape?

The school provides both formative feedback through regular tutorials with tutors. Then we as students can continuously improve our work throughout the semester before the summative assessment hand-in. It is such an effective way for us to learn and grow.

Have you felt supported by the School during your studies?

I felt like I had received an all-rounded support by the school, like I receiving my first ever summer UK placement opportunity through the landscape employability website, getting volunteering opportunities and meeting employers at the employability fairs for the graduate roles.

How have you found the cost of living in Sheffield?

The cost of living in Sheffield is affordable when compared with cities nearby like Manchester. A city that you can enjoy yourself with a wide range of activities while would not overspending a lot.

Do you think your course is setting you up for a career in the future?

Yes definitely! My MLA (5-year integrated master course, with 1-year placement) has shaped my future. One of the highlights was getting work experience by joining a landscape architecture company last year. Putting university experience in real-life project scenarios was very rewarding, and getting the opportunity to start building the connections with other professionals in the landscape industry.

How have you found our student societies?

Landmark is our department’s student society. It hosts various activities, ranged from guest speaker talk to our recently spring ball. An exciting society to get knowing others in different year groups.

Did you come from an art or design background before doing the course?

Not really. I did something totally different back in secondary school. However, I always enjoy nature and would like to combine my passions for plants and design. As long as you can keen on trying and be creative on different ideas, it’s surely a great course for you to do.
