James studied MArch Architecture: Collaborative Practice. After graduation he is now back working in practice in Manchester contributing to projects across the UK and further developing his career.
What is your current role?
Since graduating, I returned to HTA Design’s Manchester office as a Part 2 Architectural Assistant, contributing to high-rise residential projects across the UK, with responsibilities centred on design development, placemaking, and creating sustainable, community-focused neighbourhoods.
How did your course benefit your student experience and career?
The Collaborative Practice course strengthened my professional and personal development, enabling me to continue full time work alongside studies and build lasting relationships with others who were on the course as well.
In what way did your experience at University of Sheffield prepare you for your current career?
The Collaborative Practice course prepared me for my career by developing a strong work–life balance whilst also improving my presentation and communication skills. I also felt a strong increase in my efficiency through balancing full-time practice with academic study. Sheffield offered a refreshing escape from Manchester and London's busyness, with wonderful greenery and easy access to the beautiful Peak District.
What advice would you give to students interested in pursuing a similar career to you?
Stay passionate and curious and don't simply follow the norm. Find inspiration everywhere you go, from streets and landscapes to everyday moments, and let every experience shape your architectural perspective.
