Our Impact
We show our impact through our real world collaborative work.
- Providing a route from fundamental quantum science to industrially relevant technologies and companies.
- Enabling cross-sector impact: from materials to devices, from algorithms to applications, from spin-out to scale-up.
- Building capacity: training skilled researchers, linking academia and industry, enhancing the UK quantum technology ecosystem.
- Case 1: Spin-out company – Aegiq & photonic quantum computer
One of our research spin-outs, Aegiq (originating within our group), has developed single-photon detectors and is delivering the first integrated photonic quantum computer. By leveraging our photonic device design, semiconductor growth and nanofabrication capabilities, the company has advanced prototype quantum photonic hardware and is now moving toward commercial readiness. This demonstrates the pathway from our lab infrastructure, through spin-out, to industry-facing hardware solutions.
- Case 2: Quantum algorithms for differential equations
In the theory group led by Prof. Kyriienko (and collaborators such as Dr Ouyang) we have developed novel protocols for solving differential equations using quantum-algorithmic techniques. These methods exemplify how quantum computing research within SQC transitions into practical scientific computing applications (for example in fluid dynamics, machine learning and modelling). The work has generated engagement with engineering and computational science communities and demonstrates our ability to deliver theoretical innovation with real-world potential.
- Case 3: Communication & outreach impact
Our members are actively engaged in outreach and communication activities, supporting the national quantum ecosystem. For example, SQC researchers contributed to the recent event in June 2025 (Quantum Roundtable) hosted at SQC, bringing together academic and industrial stakeholders to shape quantum strategy. These activities exemplify our commitment to building the ecosystem: we don’t just do research, we convene, connect, and catalyse.
