Physicists from the University of Sheffield have helped to develop a flexible X-ray solution now submitted for a patent.
Dr Kristin Lohwasser and Dr Scott Wilbur, from the Department of Physics and Astronomy, have been working in collaboration with four European partners: TWI Hellas, RISE Institute, Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute and Optoelectronica as part of the European Horizon 2020 programme.
The FleX-RAY project focuses on taking steps towards making the accurate imaging of complex geometries possible, while aiming to explore the possibility of decreasing manufacturing and maintenance costs.
Dr Lohwasser said: “It’s exciting to see how several innovations have come together to form a FleX-RAY prototype which is now ready to be taken to the next level. We are currently looking for interested parties to target more specific applications.”
To mark the project’s conclusion, a final, online FleX-RAY webinar is being held on 7 December 2023, dedicated to showcasing how the technology has progressed so far.
Dr Wilbur will be presenting along with other project members on scintillating fibre manufacturing, photon counting electronics, 3D shape sensing and image reconstruction, as well as sharing some proof-of-concept results.
