Why I chose to study International Business Management

My journey toward studying International Business Management began in primary school during an enterprise competition. From an early age, I discovered that I thrived in collaborative environments where I could lead, create, and innovate as part of a team. Our group went on to win the competition, turning £20 into £300 — an experience that sparked both my entrepreneurial curiosity. My interest in the international dimension of business developed later, after working with Camp America in Florida and living abroad for the first time. Immersing myself in a new culture broadened my perspective and deepened my curiosity about global markets, cross-cultural communication, and international opportunities. Combining these passions at the University of Sheffield has been an incredible experience.

I chose Sheffield not only for its reputation as a prestigious Russell Group university, but also because it allowed me to remain in my hometown. This gave me the opportunity to continue working and saving to fund further travel abroad, while studying at an institution that challenges and inspires.

My placement year has enhanced my technical competencies and understanding of working within a global business

I am currently completing my placement year in Marketing with Bosch Power Tools, an experience that has been both eye-opening and transformative. Gaining insight into the operations of a global organisation has deepened my understanding of how strategy is executed at scale, and this exposure will be invaluable as I return to my final year of studies with a more practical and commercially aware perspective. Despite being an intern, I have consistently felt valued and trusted with meaningful responsibility. I have organised events and supplier days, analysed promotional performance, created point-of-sale materials for retail stores, supported the development of social media content, and contributed to magazine editing. These experiences have allowed me to develop a well-rounded understanding of marketing, from creative execution to performance analysis. Working within a company that places such strong emphasis on employee development has been a privilege. I feel genuinely supported by my team, which has encouraged both my professional growth and confidence. My role has enabled me to explore my creativity while simultaneously strengthening my analytical capabilities, particularly through developing Excel skills. Overall, this placement has significantly enhanced both my technical competencies and my understanding of working within a global business environment.

The support I have received from Sheffield throughout both my study abroad experience and my placement year has been truly exceptional. At no point did I feel alone; dedicated one-to-one guidance was consistently available, whether through application support, personalised meetings, or advice on securing funding through scholarships and financial schemes. The teams also went above and beyond by connecting me with former students, allowing me to gain valuable personal insight and reassurance before embarking on these new chapters. Their encouragement and expertise gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities I might otherwise have hesitated to take. I am incredibly grateful to both the Placements Team and the Study Abroad Team — I genuinely would not be where I am today without their unwavering support.

I've grown in confidence and independence

The highlight of my course so far has been the opportunity to study abroad in Miami — an experience that has reshaped me personally, professionally, and academically. Living away from my home comforts challenged me in ways I had never experienced before, but it also pushed me to grow in confidence and independence while forming meaningful connections with inspiring people from around the world. A key part of my curriculum required active networking, which initially took me outside of my comfort zone. However, it strengthened my communication skills and taught me how to build professional relationships with intention and confidence. Adapting to a new culture further developed my cultural awareness and ability to operate effectively in unfamiliar environments — an essential skill in international business. Academically, I was challenged to present weekly, contribute thoughtfully to debates, and critically analyse business case studies. Being encouraged to consistently articulate and defend my ideas refined both my public speaking and analytical skills. Overall, my time in Miami has been transformative, equipping me with resilience, global perspective, and the confidence to thrive in international settings.

Where I hope my degree will take me

My future career aspiration is to achieve a first-class degree in International Business Management and use it as a foundation to build a successful global career. I aim to either become an entrepreneur, creating and leading my own venture, or to take on a leadership role within a multinational corporation where I can contribute strategically to international growth and innovation. This degree is equipping me with the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to achieve these ambitions. The theoretical framework of my course has strengthened my strategic thinking, analytical ability, and understanding of global markets.

In addition, my placement year with Bosch has provided invaluable real-world experience, allowing me to apply academic concepts in a professional setting and develop practical business insight. Furthermore, my international study experience has enhanced my cultural awareness, adaptability, and confidence in diverse environments — qualities that are essential for leadership in today’s globalised economy. Together, these academic, professional, and international experiences will help me to achieve my dreams.
