I’ve always been interested in how organisations grow, make strategic decisions, and create value in competitive environments. Studying Business Management allows me to understand not only the theory behind how businesses operate, but also how to apply that knowledge in real-world situations. I decided to study at the University of Sheffield because of its strong academic reputation and the quality of teaching within the Management School. I was also drawn to Sheffield’s supportive community and vibrant student life, which made it feel like a place where I could grow both academically and personally.

Staff are approachable and genuinely invested in students

What I’ve enjoyed most about studying Business Management is the interactive nature of the course. Group projects and case studies have helped me develop practical skills such as teamwork, communication, and problem-solving, which are essential in a business environment. Working with students from different backgrounds has given me new perspectives and strengthened my ability to collaborate effectively. I’ve also really appreciated the support from lecturers and academic staff which has made a big difference. They are approachable and genuinely invested in students’ progress, which creates a positive and motivating learning environment.

Developing my analytical, numerical and data skills
During my first year studying Business Management, I’ve developed a strong foundation in core business disciplines, particularly through modules such as Economics and Accounting and Finance for Managers. Studying Economics has helped me understand how markets operate, how external factors influence businesses, and how organisations respond to economic challenges. Meanwhile, Accounting and Finance for Managers has given me valuable insight into financial decision-making, budgeting, and interpreting financial statements. This course has strengthened my analytical and numerical skills, as well as my ability to interpret data and apply it to business scenarios. I’ve also developed critical thinking skills by evaluating different economic theories and financial strategies, and considering their real-world implications. In addition, group work and class discussions have helped me improve my communication and teamwork skills.

As a first-year student, I already feel that the course is building a strong academic and professional foundation that will support my development throughout the rest of my degree and future career.

Sheffield is a very student-friendly city

One of the things I’ve been enjoying most about studying at the University of Sheffield is the balance between academic life and the surrounding environment. Sheffield is a very student-friendly city, and there’s always something happening, whether it’s through societies, events, or social activities. One of my favourite experiences so far has been hiking. Sheffield’s location is perfect because it’s so close to the Peak District, which makes it easy to explore nature and take a break from studying. I really enjoy being able to go on hikes, enjoy the scenery, and spending time outdoors. It’s a great way to relax and recharge while also staying active.

Next steps

My future career aspiration is to work in supply chain and logistics. I’m particularly interested in how businesses manage operations, optimise processes, and ensure that products and services move efficiently from suppliers to customers. I find the strategic and analytical side of supply chain management especially interesting, as it plays a crucial role in organisational success and global trade. I’m especially excited about the optional modules available in my second and third years, including those focused on supply chain and operations management, as they will allow me to specialise further in this area.
