How did you make your decision to study International Business Management at the University of Sheffield?

I chose to study International Business Management because I wanted to understand how businesses operate across different cultural, economic and regulatory environments. In a globalised economy, I was particularly interested in how strategy, leadership and decision-making adapt when organisations operate internationally rather than domestically. The integrated year abroad was a key factor in my decision, as I wanted immersive international experience to develop cultural awareness, adaptability and a broader business perspective. I was also drawn to the opportunity to explore sustainability and responsible business practices within a global context, understanding how multinational firms balance profitability with social and environmental responsibility.

I chose the University of Sheffield because of its strong academic reputation and the welcoming, supportive atmosphere created by both the lecturers and the wider student community. During my research and visits, I was struck by how approachable and engaging the teaching staff were, which made the learning environment feel both rigorous and supportive. The city of Sheffield itself also played a significant role in my decision.

What have been the highlights of the course?

What I have most enjoyed about my studies at the University of Sheffield was how the course developed my ability to think analytically and strategically about how organisations operate within wider economic and competitive systems. Modules such as Business Economics in a Contemporary Society and Analysis for Decision Making particularly stood out, as they strengthened my ability to evaluate incentives, market structures, and data-informed decision-making in a structured way. I also found Management Themes and Business Management in Context especially engaging, as they introduced strategic frameworks and organisational dynamics that helped me understand how firms position themselves and manage long-term transformation.

The opportunity, made available through Sheffield’s international exchange programme, to spend a full academic year at Lund University has further broadened this perspective, allowing me to study innovation management, entrepreneurship, and organisational change in a Scandinavian context and deepen my interest in future mobility and strategic transformation.

How have you developed on the course?

Through the programme so far, I have developed strong analytical and strategic thinking skills, particularly in evaluating market structures, incentives, and organisational dynamics. I have strengthened my ability to apply frameworks to real business challenges, conduct structured market and competitor analysis, and support data-informed decision-making using tools such as Excel. Additionally, the international exchange at Lund has enhanced my cross-cultural communication, adaptability, and understanding of innovation management, entrepreneurship, and organisational change within a global context.

The programme supports my aspiration to build a career in innovation and strategic development within future mobility and sustainable transport. The analytical, economic, and organisational foundations I have developed combined with exposure to innovation management and international business environments prepare me to contribute to roles focused on electrification, digital transformation, and market strategy.

How were you supported with your year abroad?

The University of Sheffield has provided strong support throughout my year abroad, both academically and personally. As a student with dyslexia, I have received adjustments and guidance to help manage my studies effectively in a new academic environment. I have also benefited from one to one meetings with the programme lead, Richard Bruce, and the continued availability of the student experience officer, Daniel Hector, for advice and support, which has made the transition to studying internationally smooth and well supported.

What have you enjoyed most about the city and University of Sheffield?

What I have enjoyed most about the University of Sheffield is the supportive and welcoming environment, both academically and socially. The city itself has a strong sense of community and is surrounded by green spaces and the Peak District, which offers a great balance between university life and outdoor experiences. The approachable lecturers and accessible support services have also made it a positive and motivating place to study.
