Why Business Management, and why Sheffield

I wanted to study Business Management because of the knowledge and skillset I could gain. In my view, the world runs in an intricate system of organisations and individuals, and so by understanding how businesses and other organisations worked, I can understand how everything works. I think the degree is quite versatile, so having it will allow me to join various industries and explore my interests.

I thought that Sheffield was a great place to study my course because of its position as one of the Top 100 universities in the world. For me, this not only meant high-quality education, but a rich network of perspectives from other people. In addition to this, I was lucky enough to be offered one of Sheffield's scholarships for international students, so I thought this was an opportunity I could not pass up.

Developing my skillset

I most enjoyed the modules that were challenging enough to make me grow. One of the modules was a business economics module that used games in workshops to illustrate typically hard-to-grasp concepts in economics. Many of the concepts were new to me, so I appreciated having to learn something new while having fun. I also enjoyed the modules that  taught us Microsoft Excel, as this was a practical tool to learn.

I have learnt much about working in groups through workshops and group assessments. I have played several roles, such as leader, follower, and liaison, and throughout the process, learnt how empathy, organisation, communication, and collaboration could be employed to effectively make contributions to the team. I also learnt technical skills such as presentation development and spreadsheets through my assessments, which were useful in applying to my extracurriculars and can be built upon to prepare me for the industry. Finally, I believe my course conditioned me to think more strategically through the concepts we learn in each module. I am confident in my understanding of marketing, operations management, human resources, and finance. However, beyond this, I am also confident in how these business functions work together to ensure a business's success.

Where I'm going next

I aspire for my future career to be people-centred. In particular, I want to set a standard for organisations to be more ethical, collaborative, and compassionate because, on an individual level, this empowers the employees. Meanwhile, on an economic level, this raises the standards of the workforce. Coming from a country that I know has the potential to grow, I want to make that impact. By pursuing Business Management, I hope to use the knowledge and skills I gained to make changes to organisations that ultimately help me achieve this. Because of the course's global lens, I am pushed to broaden my perspective and be more inclusive of different people and situations. I am also made to be more critical towards the impact of global and local issues, while keeping up to date with the business environment.

What I've loved about Sheffield

The University provides many ways to socialise and get involved in the community, making it one of the most enjoyable parts of my time here. For example, I am an academic rep, which means I play a part in making changes to my course. It empowers me to be able to meet other students that are reps and work in a committee of staff and students to shape our education and make an impact. I am also involved in a society called Enactus Sheffield as the HR Director, where I have built lasting friendships and learnt about myself as I took in responsibilities that built my skills and confidence.
