I chose the University of Sheffield because of its reputation as a student-friendly and safe city, which was especially important to me as an international student
My interest in Strategic Marketing and Branding developed naturally from my academic background in international communication and cultural studies. Having experienced different cultures and educational systems, I became increasingly curious about how brands are perceived across markets and how cultural context shapes consumer behaviour. I wanted to move beyond communication alone and gain a deeper strategic understanding of how brands position themselves globally while adapting to local audiences. I chose the University of Sheffield because of its reputation as a student-friendly and safe city, which was especially important to me as an international student. I was also immediately drawn to the course itself — the combination of marketing and branding resonated with my interest in both strategic analysis and the ways brands build identity and long-term connections with consumers. The programme felt closely aligned with my academic background and long-term career aspirations.
Working with classmates from diverse national and cultural backgrounds allows me to gain new perspectives and challenge my own assumptions
During my course, I have developed a stronger strategic understanding of marketing and brand management, particularly in analysing consumer behaviour across different cultural contexts.
I have learned how to evaluate market dynamics, identify target segments, and craft clear positioning strategies that align with both business objectives and consumer expectations. Through case studies and applied coursework, I have strengthened my analytical and critical thinking skills, becoming more confident in translating theoretical concepts into practical marketing solutions. These experiences have improved my ability to interpret consumer insights and turn them into actionable strategic recommendations.
This degree has strengthened my independent research skills and deepened my understanding of consumer behaviour, brand positioning, and market analysis.
My long-term goal is to build a career in the marketing department of a global company, ideally in a role focused on strategy and planning. I am particularly interested in positions that involve analysing consumer insights, developing marketing strategies, and shaping brand direction across different markets. I also have a growing interest in fashion marketing, where branding and identity play a central role. This degree has strengthened my independent research skills and deepened my understanding of consumer behaviour, brand positioning, and market analysis. Through coursework and collaborative projects, I have learned how to approach marketing challenges in a structured and strategic way. I am now keen to gain practical industry experience and see how these ideas are applied in real business environments. I hope to contribute meaningfully to a global organisation while continuing to grow as a marketing professional with a multicultural perspective.
I value the diversity of the community here
What I enjoy most about Sheffield is the environment. The Peak District is truly one of my favourite parts of living here. Being so close to nature allows me to recharge whenever I feel stressed from academic work. Sheffield has many parks and green spaces, and I often find that spending time outdoors helps me reset and reflect. It has become my own way of maintaining balance during my studies. I also appreciate how friendly and welcoming the city feels. The cost of living is relatively affordable compared to many other UK cities, which makes student life more comfortable. The recent opening of one of the largest Korean supermarkets in the UK has also been a pleasant surprise for me as a Korean student — it makes Sheffield feel even more like home. Most importantly, I value the diversity of the community here. I have made friends from many different countries, and I enjoy spending time together, whether that’s watching films, exploring the city, or simply sharing conversations. Having many Chinese friends has also allowed me to reconnect with my experience of living in China and use my language skills in everyday life, which feels both meaningful and rewarding.
