Staying in Sheffield

Having already completed my undergraduate degree here, I knew Sheffield very well and was not ready to leave the city anytime soon! It is the perfect student city in my opinion! It has so many parks, coffee shops, events and so much culture to immerse yourself into. It is also on the cheaper side which is a massive bonus.

Impressive facilities

The triple crown accreditation was what drew me initially. It was very impressive and desirable to me. Then, I dug deeper into the faculty and discovered all of the facilities it has to offer. The employability hub is so great and remains an asset for life.

Transferable skills

Journalism taught me so many transferable skills. I was able to work in a team in a high intensity environment when I had my live news days and magazine production modules. I was taught how words and branding echo into the public’s ears. Journalism is all about creativity, communication and managing the work of yourself and others which pieces perfectly into this next chapter as I embark on a career in management.

Exploring my options

I realised journalism was not the right industry for me, and wanted to explore more options to discover what I was interested in. I had taken some business modules while I spent a year abroad in Norway and grew a fondness for the subject. I realised I thrived being in a leadership role and had entrepreneurial tendencies I need to pursue. This masters course felt perfect for me. While I knew it would be a big step from journalism, the comfort of being in Sheffield eases the stress as I only need to adapt to a new subject, not a new city.

Adjusting to postgraduate study

The workload is definitely more strenuous with a plethora of readings to get through each week. However, I do believe that with a masters, comes an even greater drive to succeed and use the time to its full advantage, as it is only a year long. With a trusty google calendar and supportive staff, life can be moderately balanced

Course highlight

Meeting so many amazing people! The course is so international and I have learnt so much about different cultures from the friends I have made on this course. I cannot wait to visit them all around the world.

Sheffield is a green city

The abundance of independent cafes and vintage/charity shops. I have a different cafe for every mood I am in, I cannot say the same for my hometown! There is also so much green space to find some very much needed zen. The parks are stunning and the Peak District is so near!

Making friends

I have made so many friends this year, more than my entire undergraduate experience! A West Street and Foundry night out is unbeatable, but my wholesome heart belongs to the treehouse board game café.

Developing my skills

I feel I have an immense grasp on how the corporate world works now as my understanding of finance, markets and operations has grown significantly. I have gained essential marketer skills and can make strategic decisions which will benefit a company someday.

Getting involved with societies

I am on the committee of the Vegetarian and Vegan Society as the Publicity Officer. This, as well as being a content creator for the Management School, has really enabled me to tap into my social media and editing skills, helping me build a portfolio of multimedia work. It has made me consider social media marketing/management as a potential career path.

After graduation plans

I hope to have some internships lined up as I would like to try different things and discover what works for me, and gain relevant skills. But first and foremost, I would love to travel the world. I have such an itch for exploring new places and spending time with different cultures that I just need to scratch!

Preparing for a career

I have acquired a depth of knowledge about what it takes to be a manager and some of the responsibilities and key decisions which come with particular roles. With this understanding, I am ready to succeed in any role that is put towards me.
