Eoin has committed to his personal and professional growth since his first day at the Management School, and made the most of every opportunity during his studies.

Building commercial awareness

During his placement year at IBM Eoin successfully led a proof of concept project, gained experience of client relationship management with a large public sector organisation. As an IBM Skills Build Ambassador for Sheffield, he connected the University Careers Service with IBM so that they can facilitate student access to IBM’s free online skills development platform. When he mentored a Future Intern as part of the IBM Buddy Scheme, his mentee secured a job offer at Google.

As well as his placement year, Eoin also grew his employment experience by working part-time as a Warehouse Assistant for e-commerce business, Mailboxsocks, and also as a Bartender in the Students’ Union nightclub, Foundry. These roles provided him with vital experience of working on the ground in high-pressured environments.

Eoin was one of only 24% of participants who successfully applied for a place on Avado’s FastFutures programme, where he embarked on 8 weeks of digital business skills development before leading a team of 5 students to propose a new mobile app to BT.

Global outlook

Eoin stepped outside his comfort zone time and time again to improve his cultural knowledge and interpersonal skills. Starting with a 3-week summer school at LMU Munich, Germany, Eoin completed an International Management course, making time to gain insight into the business practices of different cultures by working closely with international classmates.

Following his second year, Eoin was awarded a place on Korea University’s 1-month study abroad program on the topic of international business. He took this opportunity to travel abroad alone for the first time, forming a global group of friends whilst living and studying in Seoul.

Even during his placement year, Eoin used his annual leave to broaden his horizons and improve his employability prospects by travelling to Tokyo, Japan to study for two short courses on Waseda University’s Summer Study Abroad programme. As well as learning some of the Japanese language, he developed a strong understanding about cross-cultural communication and added to his expanding network of global friends.

Proactive and inclusive engagement

Eoin is an enthusiastic contributor to the community who took on numerous roles during his time at Sheffield. Within the University, Eoin represented the Management School as a Student Ambassador. He took an active role in sharing the student voice as an Academic Representative for his degree programme for two years running. He was also a Sheffield Mentor to two first year students and an exchange student, meeting regularly with his mentees and connecting them to helpful services across the University.

As an active member of the Management Society (MSoc) he was elected Social Secretary on the committee in second year. He took on board members’ feedback and redeveloped the society’s logo to appear clearer and more inclusive, removing the suit and tie imagery and changing the ‘ManSoc’ abbreviation to ‘MSoc’. As Careers Officer on the committee in final year, Eoin arranged employability talks and events for society members.

Off campus, Eoin volunteered with vulnerable person’s charity The Sunday Centre, helping to provide hot food, drinking and clothing to people in need.
