Structural performance of 3D concrete printed composites

In this project, we will develop and validate a novel design-for-manufacturing paradigm, where closed-loop iteration across all scales of the concrete being 3D-printed, from the fresh to the hardened state, will be combined with an innovative approach to reinforcement design.

Summary

The work will establish the best machine tool path sequences and rheology while extruding cement-based materials and develop assembly methods to enable the insertion of reinforcement between layers, in order to evaluate the implications for the mechanical characteristics of the composite material in its hardened state. Once understood, this can be captured in model-based design tools, which can then be validated through design performance prediction, manufacture and testing of components.
